Davius was running from what he didn’t want to face. The mineral leeches had attacked, as he had predicted, as soon as they hit the Cobalt pocket. As he ran past the gold and blue walls, he could hear the screams of the afflicted, The screams of the burned as the leeches’ alkaline body touched theirs, the very substance that melted through gold and iron ores now searing away at some poor creature’s flesh, a fate he did not want to face.
Suddenly, His amulet glowed, and a red beam shot from it and he saw then in front of him, his only chance at survival, and a standard laser drill. It wasn’t enough to kill a guard of the mine, but it should be strong enough to repel the leeches when they came.
Suddenly, a score of vermin guards came rushing around the corner, levelling their bolt pistols at him. He froze, and dropped the laser. Then he stared in horror as they fell back, some firing pointlessly at the leeches, which had crept up and attacked from behind, other toward Davius screaming for help from other guards.
Within moments of the attack, the safety doors opened, followed swiftly by a battle laser robot, capable of shearing through solid Mithril.
Then it all went black.
The next thing Davius felt was a throbbing pain in the back of his head. He was in the Mining camp’s medical room, with many guards and miners complaining loudly on beds near him. He got up from his bed slowly, noticing his amulet on the side table. It shone a brilliant blue as he touched it, and as he did the pain in his head slowly faded away, releasing his mind and making him able to stand.
He stood, and one of the female foxes ran over, exclaiming that he shouldn’t be out of his bed so early and spouting medical nonsense. “Please Mr. Badger, get in your BED! I do not recommend you even STAND let alone WALK!” With this, Davius turned to her and said “See that Fox over there? She saved me, twenty guards and a hell of a lot of others. Please make sure she lives to tell the tale.” The fox nodded, and hurried over to the stricken hero.
The next five weeks passed hurriedly, which involved many losses and cave collapses. The fox Davius had paid attention to had made friends with him, and the two were now un-separable.
“C’mon Sevarinus, they’ll spot us!” Called Davius, cutting an odd spectacle for anyone who could see him. He had a black suit on, and had wrapped his amulet in cloth lest it should shine and betray their position.
Together they boarded the craft, climbing through the landing gear, them and fifty chosen others who were destined to slave in the mines now that the leeches had been defeated, never again to serve under the harsh rule of the vermin captors.
